Walk to School Week

This week (16th-20th May 2011) is Walk to School Week.

The Walk to School campaign encourages primary school pupils, parents and staff to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives by walking to and from school wherever possible. Walking to school regularly is a fantastic way to help reach the recommended daily 60 minutes of activity to benefit a child’s health. Over the past two decades, the number of children who walk to school has dropped from 62% to 48%, with an enormous 43% being driven to school in cars – despite the fact that the majority of primary school pupils live within a mile and a half of their school. Visit www.walktoschool.org.uk for more information.

We walk to school… do you?

Something that I find interesting is that it takes the same amount of time to strap my the three Littlesheeps into their car seats, drive to school, park in the town carpark, unload them all from the car and walk round to school as it does to just walk from home to school!

If you don’t usually walk – maybe try it this week and see if driving really is quicker!
