Last time I did a menu I promised an international theme so how did it go?
Then it all went a bit off plan because of holidays… think we did manage pasta on the Thursday and we were on course for a Fish and Chip tea until we got stuck in traffic on the way to Giggleswick for our holiday and we stopped for McDonalds instead!
I promised an International Food Week during the holidays following the fond memories of when we did this a few years ago.
Tapas (Spain), Fajitas (Mexico), Pizza (Italy), Curry, Rice, Naan and Poppadom (India) and Fish & Chips (UK!)
So here is our plan:
Monday: Tacos, Nachos and Rice (Mexican)
Tuesday: Paella (Spain)
Wednesday: Sushi (Japan)
Thursday: Lasagne / Calzone (Italy)
Friday: Fish & Chips! (UK)
So the children planned the summer holidays and said they wanted to do cooking – I got the impression when I started talking to them about what they were going to cook us for dinner it was more about cooking cakes but we did get a few recipe books out of the library and there are a few main meals from ‘We Can Cook: Kids in the Kitchen‘ that I hope to try out over the holidays.
- Spicy Sausage Tortilla
- Presto Pesto Pasta
- Sticky Chicken
- Honey Mustard Chicken
- Turkey Patties
- Ham and Mozzarella Calzone
- Quick and Easy Risotto
- Mini Toads-in-the-Hole
- Thai Pork Patties
- Cheesy Burgers
Watch this space for the outcomes (and tweaks we will undoubtedly make when I forget some of the ingredients!
So I missed meal plan blogging last week – here is what we ended up with…
- Monday: Chicken pasta bake
- Tuesday: Pizza
- Wednesday: Burgers in buns with burger cheese and wedges
- Thursday: Lamb kebabs and rice
- Friday: Fish fingers, chips and baked beans
- Saturday: Meatball pasta bake (was going to be spaghetti bolognaise but I did Tesco shop and dinner in the wrong order and we had meatballs in the freezer!)
- Sunday: BBQ for First Communion Celebration
The week before sort of went to plan – the Mediterranean pasta was universally hated (too olivey I think was the complaint), the weekend got taken over by Tennis and the trip to Horrible Histories and I can’t really remember what we had – I think we had ‘raid the freezer for left over pasta bakes’ on Saturday as we were all late back and chicken with gravy on Sunday?
- Monday: Cheesey tuna pasta
- Tuesday: Pizza
- Wednesday: ?
- Thursday: Spaghetti bolognaise
- Friday: Fishfingers, chips and baked beans / peas
- Saturday: ????? (I’m out)
- Sunday: Hunters chicken with wedges or jacket potatoes
or Sweet chilli chicken and rice
My brain clearly doesn’t like the middle of the week because I can never think of what to cook then, maybe I’ll do the sweet chilli chicken and rice then – that will fill the gap… Anyone else got any better ideas?
I’ve been rubbish at meal planning for the past month or so and you can tell as we’ve slipped back into the same old same old meals and going to Tesco a zillion times a week so here goes…
Monday: Mediterranean Tuna Pasta Bake (well I need to use up the olives, capers and anchiovies)
Tuesday: Pizza (a Tuesday staple!)
Friday: Fish Fingers, chips & beans or peas (as usual!)
Sunday: Out to celebrate the birthdays?
Mmm… that doesn’t look like a plan – will try harder next week!
I neglected to post the Bank Holiday Meal plan as we didn’t really have a plan last week as it was the holidays and different children were going to be in different places at different times – but it was pretty much a typical week although being only with Middle and Miss Littlesheep on Friday we had Fish and Chips from the Chip Shop as a treat.
Recapping on the week before… things more or less went to plan – we didn’t go out on Thursday in the end so had Hunters Chicken then and we raided the freezer on Saturday for leftovers!
Chicken and Sesame Pasta Bake (NEW!)
This was really simple – cook tin of condensed soup (diluted with milk), stir in tin of sweetcorn and cooked chicken breast pieces, mix with cooked pasta and top with a mix of cheese and (the sneaky sesame bit) sesame seed breadsticks (left over from Christmas as *no-one* likes sesame seeds) whizzed up.
Verdict – everyone ate it without complaint except biggest Littlesheep who said the topping was yucky… he had his reheated later and the pasta had gone a big stodgy so I think maybe the soup needs to be a bit more diluted if I was to make it again.
Last week…was pretty much a typical week of meals (although we did have Fish and Chips takeaway on Driday
- Monday: Meatball Pasta Bake
- Tuesday: Pizza
- Wednesday: Tuna Risotto
- Thursday: Cheesy Peasy Pasta
- Friday: Fish fingers, chips and beans
- Saturday: Eat out (still have those vouchers to use!)
- Sunday: Something NEW!… off in search of inspiration
Oh dear – I neglected to write a meal plan for last week and neglected to write about very much at all – I’ll have to catch up with all the things that happened… You can tell from the number of trips to Tesco last week that I hadn’t planned properly so I think focussing each Monday on what we are going to eat has helped us be slightly more organised.
The Littlesheeps are now all on Easter holidays so I asked them what they wanted to eat over the holidays to see if I could find out what their favourites from our new meals are… Hunters Chicken came up but apart from that it was pretty much the usual.
So a plan for this week:
- Monday: Chicken and Sesame Pasta Bake (NEW!)
- Tuesday: Pizza
- Wednesday: Lasagne
- Thursday: Eating out
- Friday: Fish Fingers, Chips & Beans
- Saturday: Hunters Chicken
- Sunday: Family bring and share buffet
